Tetra Ethyl Lead (TEL) was initially added to petrol for engines with high compression ratios and high power output. This reduced pre-ignition (pinking) and associated engine destruction. Improved valve seat lubrication and longer valve seat life were added benefits.
If your older vehicle has a high compression ratio, a fuel additive needs to provide 2 solutions.
(1) Increase the octane level to reduce pre-ignition (pinking) and associated engine destruction.
(2) Provide improved valve seat lubrication for longer valve seat life.
If your older vehicle has a high compression ratio, installing hardened valve seats is only a partial solution.
Classic Motoring published A Guide to Unleaded Additives that explains the above problems in more detail.

If you live in the USA, Bardahl Instead O’Lead Gold (lead substitute) meets the above requirements. For other countries, refer to the above A Guide to Unleaded Additives. It is also best to stay with the same additive.
